KHORRAMABAD, IRAN : A car is covered in mud to symbolize mourning during the festival of Ashura...Every year to mark the death of Imam Hussein, Shia Muslims mourn for two days. In Khorramabad and Lorestan in the west of Iran, during the first day of mourning, called Tasooa, women take a vow of silence and go through the streets with the children lighting candles. At 4 am on Ashura, the second day, men cover themselves in mud and then stand in front of a fire until the mud has dried to clay. After this they go to the mosque and pray...Photo by Farhad Babaei/Metrography
